Why Two Sloths Can Have Different Favourite Trees

Put two sloths in the same forest and they may not choose the same lunch. One might return to a familiar fig, while another favours a completely different set of trees. That is not fussiness in the human sense. It is part of a finely balanced way of living on food that is fibrous, low in energy and chemically complicated.

Sloths are famous leaf-eaters, but “leaves” is not a single, uniform food. Different trees, different seasons and even different stages of leaf growth can offer very different meals. Research is revealing that a sloth's menu can be both varied at the species level and highly personal at the individual level.

A rainforest is not one big salad bowl

All living sloth species are folivores, meaning that leaves make up most or all of their natural diet. Three-fingered sloths are the more specialised leaf-eaters, while two-fingered sloths may also eat fruit and seed pods. Even within that broad pattern, there is plenty of variation.

The Sloth Conservation Foundation reports that sloths as a group have been recorded eating leaves from more than 90 kinds of trees. An individual, however, usually rotates through a much smaller personal selection. The foundation describes roughly half a dozen to a dozen kinds of feeding trees for one sloth, with young animals learning preferences from their mothers.

This explains why the familiar image of a sloth living entirely in a Cecropia tree is too simple. Cecropia can be important, but wild sloths need a landscape containing many useful tree species. A forest with only one favourite-looking tree is not the same as a healthy, connected menu.

Young leaves can be worth the careful journey

Leaves are built to collect sunlight, not to be easy meals. Mature leaves can be tougher and may contain more defensive chemicals. Fresh growth is often softer and easier to process, so sloths commonly favour young leaves at the ends of branches.

That choice comes with a challenge. The newest leaves may sit on thin outer branches, where every movement must be deliberate. A sloth's long limbs, curved claws and hanging posture help it reach through the canopy without making an expensive trip to the ground. Moving slowly also keeps energy costs low when the meal itself offers relatively few calories.

After swallowing those leaves, the work continues in a large, multi-chambered stomach. Microbes ferment the plant material and help release nutrients. This process is slow, so careful food selection and energy-saving behaviour are closely connected.

Scientists found personal menus in maned sloths

A 2023 study in Mammalian Biology followed 13 maned sloths in two parts of Brazil's Atlantic Forest. Researchers identified 67 tree species in their diets. Many were eaten more often than their availability alone would predict, showing that the sloths were selecting rather than simply eating whatever happened to be nearest.

The study also found meaningful differences between individuals. Where local tree diversity was higher, individual diets became more distinct from one another. In less diverse habitat, the sloths' menus overlapped more. The careful conclusion is not that every sloth always needs an exact number of tree species. It is that individuals can be selective, and the range of trees available helps shape the choices they can make.

That matters especially for the maned sloth, a threatened Atlantic Forest specialist. Protecting an animal without protecting a diverse supply of suitable trees would save only part of what it needs.

Zoo sloths show preferences too

Individual tastes are also visible in managed care. In a Smithsonian's National Zoo keeper interview, a two-toed sloth named Howie was described as favouring leaves from certain trees in the Amazonia habitat, especially when those trees produced fresh growth. His apparent favourite was a mahogany tree.

That observation is not a substitute for field research, and a zoo diet is carefully managed rather than identical to life in a wild forest. It does give keepers useful information. Watching which branches, leaves and foods an animal chooses can support nutrition, enrichment and daily health checks.

What favourite trees mean for conservation

Planting trees for sloths is valuable, but diversity and placement matter. A useful restoration project connects broken canopy, includes locally appropriate food trees and allows animals to move between them without crossing roads or power lines. The goal is not simply to plant as many copies of one famous species as possible.

Personal food preferences also make wildlife rescue more complicated. A rescued sloth may reject leaves another individual readily eats. Specialist carers need knowledge of local plants, the animal's species and its previous habitat. That is one reason a sloth is not suitable as a pet: meeting its nutritional and environmental needs takes far more than offering a bowl of vegetables.

The lovely lesson is that a slow life is not a simple one. Each trip through the canopy can reflect memory, learning, leaf chemistry and what the surrounding forest has made available. Protecting sloths therefore means protecting choice: many connected trees, not just one photogenic perch.
