What a Baby Sloth's 50km Car Ride Reveals About Broken Canopies

A baby sloth survived a 50km journey beneath a car in Costa Rica. His rescue is extraordinary, but the broken canopy behind it is the bigger story.

In July 2026, a driver near Manuel Antonio noticed something almost impossible beneath the car ahead: a baby sloth was clinging to its underside while the vehicle travelled along the highway. The driver flashed his lights and sounded the horn until the car stopped. By then, the tiny passenger had apparently been holding on for more than an hour and at least 50 kilometres.

According to The Sloth Institute's account of the rescue, the youngster was uninjured. Staff worked with local SINAC wildlife officers to bring him into care, where veterinary and husbandry teams could monitor his health. It is a remarkable survival story. It is also a warning about what happens when a treetop animal runs out of trees.

How did a baby sloth end up beneath a car?

No one saw the beginning of the journey, so the exact answer is unknown. The Sloth Institute believes the incident was connected to severe habitat fragmentation around Manuel Antonio. A young sloth may have climbed beneath a parked vehicle while trying to cross open ground, seek cover or reach another patch of trees. What happened next turned that risky choice into a long highway ride.

Sloths are built for an overhead world. Their long limbs, curved claws and powerful pulling muscles are excellent for hanging beneath branches. Continuous tree cover lets them travel between feeding sites, resting places and neighbouring home ranges without descending.

Cars, roads and buildings break that network into pieces. When branches no longer meet, a sloth may have to climb to the ground and crawl across an exposed gap. On the forest floor its specialised limbs are awkward, movement is slow and danger can arrive quickly. Traffic, dogs, people and power lines turn a short missing stretch of canopy into a serious obstacle.

Protected forest can still be broken into dangerous pieces

Habitat loss is often imagined as a whole forest disappearing. The reality can be much finer-grained. A landscape may still look green from a distance while roads, gardens, cleared plots and isolated trees divide it into many small islands.

The Sloth Conservation Foundation calls this microfragmentation. Even in Costa Rica, a country known for protected areas and forest recovery, local gaps can stop canopy animals moving safely through the places where they live. A sloth does not experience the landscape as a percentage on a map. It experiences the next reachable branch.

This is especially important for a mother and baby. Young sloths normally cling to their mothers and learn which trees provide food, shelter and safe routes. If the pair becomes separated, or if a youngster has to navigate a fragmented area alone, every open crossing adds risk.

Why rescue is only the first part of the answer

The quick-thinking driver, wildlife officers and rescue team gave this baby a second chance. Once safely in care, a rescued sloth needs more than a meal and a rest. Professionals must assess injuries, hydration, body condition and behaviour while limiting unnecessary human contact. If rehabilitation is possible, the long-term aim is an animal capable of living independently in suitable habitat.

That work matters, but rescue treats the emergency after it has happened. Preventing the next emergency means repairing the routes that sloths use. Replanting native trees, protecting mature canopy and designing development around wildlife movement all reduce the number of times an animal must descend.

Wildlife bridges reconnect the canopy

Where trees cannot be reconnected immediately, carefully placed rope bridges can create an alternative aerial route. The Sloth Conservation Foundation describes wildlife bridges as a practical response to roads and other gaps that force sloths onto the ground. The Sloth Institute also installs its own canopy crossings, known as Sloth Speedways, in fragmented areas.

A rope bridge is not a replacement for a healthy forest. It is a targeted safety measure, rather like a pedestrian crossing placed where a dangerous road already exists. Location matters. Conservation teams need to understand where animals move, which trees can support a crossing and whether the bridge is actually being used.

These crossings can help more than sloths. Monkeys, kinkajous, squirrels and other tree-dwelling animals may also use connected routes. Combined with reforestation and responsible planning, they can turn isolated patches back into a usable network.

What this unlikely passenger can teach us

It is tempting to focus only on the baby's astonishing grip. Holding beneath a moving car for 50 kilometres certainly shows how powerful a sloth's hook-like claws and pulling muscles can be. Yet celebrating the feat without noticing why it happened would miss the point.

A car should never become a substitute for a branch. This youngster survived because another driver paid attention, acted quickly and contacted people who knew how to help. Many wildlife encounters end less happily.

The hopeful part is that fragmentation is a problem people can address. Keeping native trees, creating canopy connections, slowing traffic in wildlife areas, insulating dangerous power lines and supporting specialist rescue organisations all make a practical difference. The goal is not simply to save sloths after an extraordinary journey. It is to make sure they can complete ordinary journeys through the trees.
