Sloths’ Weekly Bathroom Routine – Why They Only Poop Once a Week!

Sloths’ Weekly Bathroom Routine – Why They Only Poop Once a Week!

Sloths are famous for being slow… and that includes their bathroom habits. In fact, one of the strangest (and most risky) things about sloths is that they only poop about once a week and when they do, it’s a whole event.

Why Only Once a Week?

Sloths have incredibly slow digestion, taking up to 30 days to fully process a single meal of leaves. Because of this:

  • Waste builds up slowly.

  • They simply don’t need to go very often.

  • Their low-energy lifestyle matches their minimal bathroom schedule.

The Risky Climb Down

Here’s where it gets even more unusual instead of doing their business from the safety of the trees, sloths climb all the way down to the ground to poop.

This is extremely dangerous for a sloth:

  • On the ground, they’re vulnerable to predators like jaguars, snakes, or even dogs.

  • They move slowly and awkwardly, making them easy targets.

So why take the risk? Scientists have a few theories:

  1. Territory marking – Pooping at the base of trees may help sloths mark their territory or signal mating availability.

  2. Fertilizing trees – By pooping at the base, they may help feed the tree they live in a form of natural composting!

  3. Symbiotic relationships – Some believe the sloth moths that live in their fur lay eggs in the poop, and in return help with fur health via the algae cycle.

The Big Weekly Event

  • When the time comes, sloths descend slowly and carefully to the forest floor.

  • They dig a small hole with their tail, poop a significant amount (up to a third of their body weight!), then climb back up.

  • It’s exhausting and sometimes dangerous but it’s a vital part of their natural rhythm.

In Summary:

Sloths only poop once a week, and when they do, they risk their lives climbing down to the ground. It’s one of nature’s weirdest bathroom habits and no one’s quite sure why they do it. But like everything with sloths, it’s slow, deliberate, and fascinating.
