Meet Linnaeus's Two-Toed Sloth, the Rainforest's Night-Time Climber

Linnaeus's two-toed sloth is a shaggy, nocturnal canopy specialist from northern South America. It has long limbs, hook-like claws and a lifestyle built around spending energy very carefully.

Its scientific name is Choloepus didactylus. You may also see it called Linné's two-toed sloth, the southern two-toed sloth or the unau. The names can be confusing, especially because its close relative, Hoffmann's two-toed sloth, looks remarkably similar. Yet this is a distinct species with its own range and story.

Like every living sloth, it is not lazy or unfinished. Its unusual body is a highly specialised answer to life among tropical branches, where camouflage, patience and a secure grip can matter more than speed.

Where does Linnaeus's two-toed sloth live?

The World Land Trust species profile places this sloth across tropical and subtropical forest in northern South America. Its range extends from Venezuela and Colombia into eastern Ecuador and Peru, then across northern Brazil towards the Atlantic coast.

This is an animal of the canopy. A healthy forest provides food, shelter, escape routes and the continuous network of branches it needs to travel without coming to the ground. Individual sloths may use relatively small areas, but that does not make habitat loss harmless. A small home range still needs the right trees, connected in the right places.

When forest is cleared or broken into isolated patches, a sloth may have to descend to cross an open gap. On the ground, its long limbs and curved claws are poorly suited to walking. The same anatomy that works beautifully below a branch becomes awkward and vulnerable on soil or roads.

Why is it called a two-toed sloth?

The familiar name refers to the two long digits on each front limb. The hind limbs have three. For that reason, many researchers prefer the clearer terms two-fingered and three-fingered sloths, although both naming systems remain common.

The claws are long, curved hooks rather than weapons designed for chasing prey. They help the animal suspend its body beneath branches while eating, resting and travelling. The Smithsonian's National Zoo describes long limbs of similar length, coarse fur, a short flat head and claws that can reach about 8 to 10 centimetres.

Its coat is also adapted to an upside-down life. The hair grows from the stomach towards the back, so rain can drain away while the sloth hangs beneath a branch. Grooves in the coarse outer hairs can host algae, sometimes giving the coat a greenish tint that blends with the damp canopy.

A night shift powered by leaves and fruit

Linnaeus's two-toed sloths are mainly nocturnal. They spend much of the daylight curled among branches, then become more active after dark to feed and move through the canopy. Slow does not mean motionless. It means every movement is deliberate and matched to a limited energy supply.

Their diet is broader than the leaf-heavy menu associated with many three-fingered sloths. The Animal Diversity Web account lists leaves, berries, fruit, small twigs and other vegetation, with occasional insects or other small animal matter reported. Hardened lips help crop plant food, while simple teeth grow continuously and are worn down by chewing.

Digestion is correspondingly unhurried. Food may remain in the digestive tract for weeks. This slow processing helps extract nutrients from fibrous food, but it also limits how quickly fresh energy becomes available. Their careful pace is therefore part of an entire low-cost system, not a single quirky behaviour.

How does a small dog-sized animal disappear in a tree?

The Smithsonian gives an adult length of roughly 53 to 74 centimetres and a weight of about 4 to 8 kilograms. That is around the size of a small dog, yet a wild sloth can be extraordinarily difficult to spot.

Its mottled fur breaks up its outline. A resting animal often curls into a compact shape that can resemble a knot, clump of vegetation or old nest. It is quiet, moves slowly and may remain high above the observer. Algae in the fur can add another green layer of camouflage.

This concealment is a defence, but it is not perfect. Two-toed sloths have large canine-like front teeth and can use their claws if threatened. The kindest way to see one is therefore from a respectful distance. Handling, crowding or trying to stage a close photograph turns a calm wildlife encounter into a stressful one.

Least Concern does not mean no concern

Linnaeus's two-toed sloth is currently classed as Least Concern. That category means the species is not presently judged to meet the thresholds for a threatened category across its full range. It does not promise that every local population is secure.

Forest clearance still removes the connected canopy on which this animal depends. Roads, farms and other development can divide habitat into pieces, while wildlife trafficking creates a separate welfare problem. A species can remain widespread while individual sloths face serious local danger.

Protecting intact rainforest, restoring native trees between forest patches and keeping wildlife in the wild all help. This sloth's quiet life is easy to overlook, but that is exactly what makes it such a good symbol of the canopy: a whole survival strategy hidden in plain sight, working one careful branch at a time.
