How Weather Changes a Maned Sloth's Day in the Trees

A sloth resting quietly in a tree can look as though nothing is changing. In reality, the animal may be making small but important choices throughout the day. Should it curl into a tight huddle, stretch along a branch, stay near the outside of the crown or move deeper into the leaves?

Research on northern maned sloths in Brazil suggests that temperature and sunlight help shape those choices. The findings offer a lovely glimpse into the daily life of a rarely seen species, but they also carry a serious message. For an animal whose body temperature is closely linked to its surroundings, a tree is more than somewhere to eat and sleep. It is a patchwork of warmer, cooler, brighter and more sheltered places.

Meet the northern maned sloth

The northern maned sloth, Bradypus torquatus, lives in Brazil's Atlantic Forest. Its shaggy neck fur gives it the distinctive maned appearance behind its name. Like other three-fingered sloths, it is an arboreal leaf-eater with a low-energy lifestyle and a body temperature that can vary with environmental conditions.

That makes behaviour part of its temperature-control toolkit. A sloth cannot simply turn up an internal thermostat without cost. Changing posture or choosing another part of the tree may help it respond to a cool, cloudy morning or a hot, sunny afternoon while conserving precious energy.

Eight sloths and many hours of patient watching

The study took place in Reserva Sapiranga in Bahia, Brazil. In March 2020, researchers fitted eight maned sloths with small radio-tracking backpacks. They then recorded the animals' activity, posture and position in the tree crown during daylight hours under sunny and cloudy conditions.

The team compared active behaviour with resting, curled or huddled postures with more extended ones, and inner parts of the crown with its more exposed outer areas. They also considered how easily observers could detect the animals from the ground. This matters because a survey can miss sloths that are present, especially when fur, foliage and shade combine to make them wonderfully difficult to spot.

Cooler weather brought out the sloth huddle

The sloths spent much of the observed daytime resting, often in an extended posture and towards the outside of the crown. Their choices shifted with the weather, however.

At cooler temperatures they huddled more often, particularly when conditions were cloudy. Curling the body reduces the area exposed to the air, much as we tuck in our arms on a cold day. As conditions became warmer, extended postures were more common. The results show why a single photograph cannot tell us that one posture is the normal sloth position. The same animal may use several positions as the forest's tiny local climates change.

Sunshine changed the effect of heat

Temperature alone did not explain everything. On sunny days, the sloths became less active as the air grew hotter. On cloudy days, activity increased with temperature. Sunshine therefore changed how the animals responded to the same general rise in warmth.

Their place in the crown shifted too. At temperatures above roughly 29 to 30°C, the sloths tended to use the inner crown more often. Leaves and branches there can offer shade from direct solar radiation. The researchers treated this as evidence of behavioural temperature regulation, not proof that every sloth will make the same move at an exact number on a thermometer.

That caution is important. The study followed eight individuals at one reserve. It reveals meaningful patterns, but weather, tree structure, season, age and individual preference may all influence what a particular sloth does.

Why this matters for sloth research

Weather-related behaviour can affect how scientists count wildlife. If animals change their activity or move between exposed and sheltered parts of a tree, observers may have a different chance of seeing them from one hour to the next. In this study, posture and crown position did not clearly change ground-level detectability, but understanding these relationships can still improve future surveys and stop researchers from assuming that every missed sloth means an empty patch of forest.

Radio tracking helped the team know where tagged animals were even when human eyes struggled to find them. Other projects now combine field observers with tools such as thermal cameras and drones, but patient ecological knowledge remains essential for interpreting what the technology detects.

A healthy forest offers choices

The study also helps explain why conserving habitat is not just about counting trees. A varied, connected canopy gives a sloth options: sunny edges, shaded inner crowns, feeding trees, resting places and routes that do not require a dangerous journey across the ground.

As forests become smaller or more exposed, those choices can shrink. Hotter and drier conditions may add another pressure, especially for a specialist already affected by habitat loss and fragmentation. The research does not say that one hot day will doom a sloth. It shows something subtler and more useful: weather and sunlight influence everyday decisions, so the quality and structure of habitat matter alongside its total area.

The quiet intelligence of staying comfortable

A maned sloth does not need a weather forecast. Its answer to changing conditions is written in a curl of the body, a slow stretch or a careful move into deeper shade. These may look like tiny decisions, but they are part of a finely balanced way of life.

Protecting the Atlantic Forest means protecting that range of choices. For a sloth, the right branch at the right moment can be its sun lounger, blanket and cool retreat, all in one.
