Sloths are often called nocturnal, but wild research shows a more flexible picture. Some are active by day and night, and even neighbours can keep different schedules.
Ask whether a sloth is nocturnal and you may expect a tidy yes or no. The rainforest gives a messier and much more interesting answer.
Some sloths move mostly after dark. Others feed or travel during daylight. Many are active in both periods, and two sloths living in the same patch of forest may keep surprisingly different timetables. Their day is not ruled by a single universal sloth clock.
Nocturnal, diurnal or something in between?
Animals that are mainly active during daylight are called diurnal. Those active mainly at night are nocturnal, while crepuscular animals favour dawn and dusk. There is another useful word for species that show meaningful activity during both day and night: cathemeral.
Sloths have often been placed into simple categories. Two-fingered sloths are commonly described as nocturnal, while three-fingered sloths are given a more mixed label. That is a useful starting point, but it can hide the flexibility seen when researchers follow wild animals continuously.
A 2023 study published in PeerJ monitored brown-throated three-fingered sloths and Hoffmann's two-fingered sloths in the same Costa Rican forest. Both species showed activity across day and night. The researchers described them as cathemeral rather than fitting either species into a strictly daytime or nighttime box.
Tiny loggers revealed the hidden hours
Watching a sloth is harder than it sounds. Slow movement, shaggy camouflage and a life high in leafy branches make direct observation difficult during the day. At night, following every small change of posture becomes even less practical.
To see beyond those limits, the researchers fitted eight three-fingered and seven two-fingered sloths with small data loggers. The devices recorded movement continuously over periods lasting from days to weeks. Weather conditions including temperature, rainfall, humidity and wind were monitored at the same time.
The Sloth Conservation Foundation's account of the research explains that this approach captured behaviour that a person on the forest floor would easily miss. It also avoided treating one daytime sighting as proof of an animal's full daily routine.
Even neighbouring sloths kept different schedules
One of the most striking results was not simply that sloths moved during both light and dark hours. It was how little their schedules matched.
Activity varied between individuals and also changed within the same individual from one day to another. Sloths sharing the same forest did not all become active together like workers responding to a factory bell. One might move after sunset while another used a quieter daylight window.
That lack of synchrony could be useful. If every sloth followed exactly the same timetable, predators might learn when to search most efficiently. A flexible schedule may also help an individual take advantage of favourable conditions without competing with every neighbour at once.
The study did not find a simple relationship between daily temperature and total activity. However, brown-throated three-fingered sloths increased their nighttime activity on colder nights and on nights following colder days. The pattern is another warning against reducing behaviour to one easy rule.
Habitat can change the timetable
Sloth schedules can also look different in different places. Food, predators, competition, temperature and human disturbance may all influence when it is safest or most worthwhile to move.
A separate study reported by the University of Notre Dame followed brown-throated three-fingered sloths in a highly disturbed part of Brazil's Atlantic Forest. Those animals showed a clear daytime pattern, with peak activity in the early morning and late afternoon. They still spent most of their time resting, but their active periods were more strongly diurnal than researchers expected.
The site had fewer predators and easier access to important food trees, although it was also a badly altered forest. The researchers treated the daytime schedule as a possible response to local conditions, not evidence that disturbance is good for sloths. With no nearby undisturbed habitat available for comparison, the result must be interpreted carefully.
Resting is not the same as sleeping
There is another trap hidden in the nocturnal question. A motionless sloth is not necessarily asleep.
Sloths spend long periods resting to conserve energy, digest leaves and avoid drawing attention. Data loggers can detect changes in activity, but activity budgets are not identical to sleep studies. A sloth tucked into a fork during daylight may be asleep, quietly awake or moving too little for a distant observer to tell.
This is why claims that sloths sleep all day can be misleading. Wild sloths have been measured sleeping far less than the old captive-based figure of 15 or more hours, and their periods of rest and movement are spread around the clock in ways that differ between animals.
A flexible clock suits a flexible rainforest life
Sloths live on a tight energy budget. They cannot respond to every change by sprinting away, travelling long distances or producing lots of body heat. Timing offers another kind of flexibility.
Moving when conditions are favourable can limit exposure, reduce competition and make slow travel less costly. Keeping a different schedule from nearby sloths may also make the population less predictable to predators. These ideas are plausible explanations, not proof that every sloth makes a conscious choice about its calendar.
So, are sloths nocturnal? Some often are, especially two-fingered sloths, but the best modern answer is not a simple yes. Wild sloths can be active by day and night, switch their emphasis with local conditions and follow highly individual routines.
The next time a sloth appears to be doing nothing at midday, remember that its private timetable may be much busier than the view from the forest floor suggests.
